Forest Diseases Facing CT’s Woodlands
Gain insight into the most significant forests pests and pathogens, as well as other emerging threats, impacting Connecticut. Participants will learn how to identify signs of disease and pest damage, how these threats spread, and potential management strategies to reduce affects and improve forest resilience. This class has been approved for 2 CT Forest Practitioner continuing education credits.
Volunteers Wanted: Help Restore Native Habitat at Great Mountain Forest
Join the Norfolk Nature Alliance at Great Mountain Forest for a hands-on native planting project in South Norfolk.
As part of a scientific study being conducted by The Xerces Society, we will plant native species helping these areas begin their recovery.
No tools are needed—just bring a pair of work gloves. Space is limited, so advance registration is encouraged.
Come lend a hand, learn about habitat restoration, and help give native plants a strong start at Great Mountain Forest.

Landscapes in Pastel
Experience the colors of autumn during this relaxed and creative art workshop. Guided by artist Katie Atkinson, we'll begin with a short mindfulness meditation designed to awaken the senses and encourage a deeper connection to the surrounding landscape. Using oil pastels on heavy paper, we’ll create impressionistic artwork capturing the forest’s brilliant fall colors, shifting light, and seasonal atmosphere.
Invasive Plant Species in CT: Identification, Ecology & Management
Understand how to identify and manage the most common and problematic invasive species plants found in state forests. Participants will discover the ecology of invasive species, why they spread, and how they impact native plant communities. This class has been approved for 2 CT Forest Practitioner continuing education credits.
Regenerative Building for Resilient Forests
Join GMF, Gray Organschi Architecture, and students from the Yale School of Architecture to discover how architects and foresters are pioneering regenerative construction technologies that minimize environmental impact while supporting healthy forests.
Norfolk Tour de Forest 2026
The Icebox Gravel is a 30-mile ride of mostly gravel roads. The Tour-de-Forest is a 13-mile ride with an even mix of gravel and paved roads. All roads are very rural, scenic and, for the most part, very lightly traveled.

Great Mountain and Oregon Forests – Reflections Across Decades
William G. (Bill) Robbins reflects on his first experiences in forestry at Great Mountain Forest in 1958 and his later work in Oregon as a choker setter and fire-crew foreman. Drawing on his career as an environmental historian and distinguished professor at Oregon State University, Robbins explores the connections among his family, Edward C. Childs, Great Mountain Forest, Oregon State University, and Starker Forests, Inc. He is the author of numerous books on forestry, the Pacific Northwest, and environmental history.
